Suitable for: Practicality, fuel efficiency
Pay close attention, beware, be careful: Brake wear, touch screen
Ertiga is a practical and spacious MPV that can accommodate up to 7 passengers. Its light control and compact size make it very user-friendly and easy to drive. This makes it ideal for second-hand purchases, but there are a few things you should know first.
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga has been successful in sales since its launch in 2012, thanks to its practicality, efficiency and cost-effectiveness. In 2018, Maruti launched the second generation Ertiga, which inherited the advantages of the previous generation while also adding more space and functions.
The large LED tail light is the outstanding external feature of Ertiga.
The second-generation Ertiga is equipped with two engine options at the time of its release-a new 1.5-liter gasoline engine from Ciaz, which can produce 105 horsepower and 138 Nm of torque, and a 1.3-liter diesel engine purchased by Maruti’s main Fiat. It produces 90 horsepower and 200Nm of torque. Both engines are equipped with Maruti’s SHVS hybrid technology, which is said to help improve fuel efficiency. Both engines are equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission as standard, and the 4-speed automatic torque converter is only available in the gasoline Ertiga.
Maruti later introduced a 91-horsepower gasoline-CNG variant and a new internally developed 95-horsepower, 1.5-liter diesel engine and 6-speed manual transmission. However, due to the BS6 emission standard, both 1.3-liter and new 1.5-liter diesel engines will be discontinued in April 2020.

The 1.3-liter diesel engine is powerful enough and very frugal.
In terms of fuel efficiency, in our test, the gasoline manual Ertiga returned 9.5kpl in the city and 16.8kpl on the highway. The gasoline automatically returns 7kpl in the city and 15kpl on the highway. At the same time, 1.3 diesel reached 15.2kpl and 19.4kpl in cities and highways, respectively. Although we did not test CNG or 1.5 diesel, their claimed fuel efficiency is 26.08km/kg and 24.20kpl respectively.
It is best to look for higher-decorated models on the second-hand market, such as Z or Z+, because they provide the necessary features today. The top Z+ interior is equipped with Maruti Suzuki’s SmartPlay infotainment system and Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and navigation, rear parking sensor with camera, automatic climate control, 15-inch alloy, leather-wrapped steering wheel and height-adjustable driver’s seat . Dual airbags and ABS are standard on all variants, and the automatic variant provides ESP and mountain retention functions. However, Ertiga does miss some features, such as the LED headlights with DRL and diamond-cut alloy wheels provided by the XL6.

Beige interior trim and artificial wood trim on the dashboard help lift the cabin.
Choosing the right engine-gearbox combination depends on your usage. Gasoline Ertiga makes sense to most buyers because they are cheaper to buy and run than diesel, and they are also very frugal. The automatic transmission option also adds convenience.
However, if your use involves regular long-distance running with your family, then it is one of the diesel engines you should choose. Both diesel engines are powerful enough and provide good fuel economy, but the driving performance of the 1.5 diesel engine is much better and more refined. However, obtaining second-hand 1.5 diesel will be difficult because Maruti’s models have been sold for less than a year.
As a product of Maruti Suzuki, Ertiga is mechanically reliable. In addition, the automobile manufacturer’s extensive service network throughout the country and relatively affordable spare parts prices should give you peace of mind.
Buyer, beware…
Brake pad wear

Few car owners still face premature brake wear. It is best to check the brake pads and rear drum before buying.
touch screen
On the top configuration, check whether the SmartPlay touch screen runs smoothly. The owner is facing the problem of lagging or even crashing of the touch screen.
Start/stop function
Some car owners are facing the problem that the mild hybrid system cannot operate normally. During the test drive, check whether the car is turned off when you stop, and start smoothly after you step on the clutch.
Also worth knowing
Maruti Suzuki recalled Ertiga gasoline, XL6 and Ciaz produced between January 1, 2019 and November 21, 2019, in order to repair the malfunction of the electric generator set of the SHVS mild hybrid system. Make sure that the car you are buying has been corrected.
How much does it cost
8-10 lakh rupees
Given that this generation of Ertiga is still on sale, prices in the second-hand market are on the high side. In addition, Maruti Suzuki models usually have a high resale value, which means that bargaining can be difficult. However, if you browse the classified ads carefully, you will find a suitable classified ad in your budget.
