Reports of Apple launching an iPhone 15 Pro with a periscope camera in 2023 are nothing new. However, the latest news from analyst Jeff Pu claims that Cupertino is testing prototypes and component samples for the 5x telephoto lens. A final decision on who will be the manufacturer is expected in May 2022.
When the components are approved, they will be included in the “high-end models of the 2023 iPhone lineup,” which should mean the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. A likely manufacturer of the lens would be Lante Optics, which is expected to make only 100 million units for Apple.
Periscope lenses aren’t new to many Android smartphones that have one of them — they allow the optics of longer telephoto cameras to be placed horizontally, making them suitable for modern slim phones.
While Android phones have had the technology for years, Apple has traditionally tried to perfect a feature before implementing it, and first, we’ll have to see its pixel binning for the upcoming 48 MP camera in the 2022 iPhone.
