With the release of the new 4 Series Gran Coupé, BMW has perfected the second-generation 4 Series series. The four-door coupe will join the existing 4-series lineup of coupes and convertibles, and is largely based on the four-door electric i4.

2021 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe: Dimensions
The new 4 Series is 4,783 mm, which is 143 mm longer than the first generation 4 Series Gran Coupé. Compared with the latest 3 series cars, it has also become wider and taller, and has a wider track. BMW claims that the stretched size allows for more interior space, with five seats and a 470-liter suitcase, which is 39 liters larger than before.
2021 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe: Exterior and Interior
Like other 4 series series, BMW strives to make the styling more different from the closely related 3 series. Gran Coupé retains the controversial large kidney grille. It uses BMW’s Laserlight headlights as optional extra and dimmed LED taillights, similar to the taillights on the new M4 Coupe. The new 4 Series Gran Coupe is also equipped with frameless doors, which adds to the visual effect.
The cab of the new 4 Series Gran Coupe is almost the same as that of the 3 Series sedan. It is equipped with an 8.8-inch infotainment touch screen, a 5.1-inch instrument display, sports seats and sports leather steering wheel as standard equipment. Optional equipment includes heated and ventilated seats, large panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon sound system, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.25-inch touch screen for infotainment system.
2021 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe: Engine
The 4 series Gran Coupé will provide three gasoline and two diesel models, all models using mild hybrid technology. Both the 420i and 430i use four-cylinder 2.0-liter turbocharged mild-hybrid gasoline units, which provide 184 horsepower and 245 horsepower respectively. 420i can reach 0-100kph in 7.9 seconds, and the carbon dioxide emission is 150-166g/km. For the 430i, the 0-100kph sprint time is reduced to 6.2 seconds, and the official emissions are 156-173g/km. The 420d four-cylinder diesel engine has 190 horsepower and can provide rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive. In rear-wheel drive, it achieves a carbon dioxide emission of 126-141g/km, which rises to 133-150g/km in the form of xDrive.
The top M440i xDrive variant uses a mild hybrid 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbocharged gasoline device to produce 374hp and 500Nm of torque, a 0-100kph time of 4.7 seconds, and a top speed of 250kph. The CO2 emissions of this version are 181-193g/km. All models are equipped with an 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
2021 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe: Aerodynamics and Suspension
The 4 Series Gran Coupé is based on the same CLAR platform as the i4 and 4 Series Coupes, and benefits from similar aerodynamic optimization designs, including an active flap control system and an almost sealed bottom. The company claims that it provides enhanced processing power compared to its predecessor.
The weight distribution of the 4 Series Gran Coupé is 50:50. BMW said that the design has been aerodynamically optimized and incorporates new chassis technology to provide sporty characteristics. The front axle adopts a double-joint strut suspension, and the rear axle adopts a five-link system.
Like other 4 series models, Gran Coupé is equipped with lift-related shock absorbers to control body movement and specific modes of variable sports steering. The electronically controlled rear differential is the standard configuration of the M440i and the optional configuration of the 430i.
2021 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe: M Sport optional accessories
M Sport Pro trim kits will be provided for each engine model, adding 19-inch wheels, rear spoiler, M Sport seat belts and adaptive suspension, providing a series of drive preset modes, as well as adapting to suitable adaptive settings for current driving the way. M Sport Pro cars also get M Sport performance brakes, which use different settings, with four-piston fixed calipers at the front and single-piston floating calipers at the rear. A series of other M performance parts will also be provided.
